Great Guana Cay

Great Guana Cay

On Friday morning we left Treasure Cay at 11am and cruised leisurely across the Sea of Abaco to Great Guana Cay, arriving around 12:30. We docked at the Orchid Bay Marina on the right side of Settlement Harbor. If you stay for 2 weekend nights you get the third night free, so we stayed on through Sunday.

There are two main competing rum drinks on Great Guana Cay: the Grabber and the Nipper. We sampled the Grabber first, along with some superb honey lime chicken wings (possibly worth traveling here just for the wings). Then we tried the Nipper, as well as the Pig Roast (yum!). We have the t-shirts to prove all of this; and of course everyone knows that if you have the t-shirt you must have survived the drinking there.

We also rented a golf cart and checked out the new club and marina at Baker’s Bay, which is not completed but is very upscale. We were told that transient dockage was $3/ft +power+water. Lunch at the resort was delicious and the atmosphere is relaxed.

The island foliage on Guana can be colorful and, at times, buoyant.

The Pirate's Cove (yet another bar) also offers breakfast sandwiches. Andy approved.

Dockside was not close enough for this bar: at Baker's Bay the bar is ON the dock, and we happened to note it had a big screen TV.

Sunset beach at Grabber's - here we enjoyed a wonderful evening with our friends Jeff and Izzy, of the Izzy R, as well as their guests Dick and Cathy.

Pig Roast Sunday at Nipper's: $20 for all you can eat, and all you can (stand to) watch. You won't find any dancing Andy or Annie in the crowd here.

A day at Great Guana Cay

A day at Great Guana Cay
The settlement at Great Guana Cay is one of the smallest in the central part of Abaco, but is growing. Approx 200 people call this Cay home. The Great Guana reef protects a 5 mile beach. Nippers Bar and Grill overlooks the beach from high atop a dune. These photos are from Nippers. When visiting, be careful of “the Nipper”. 4 or more may cause your eyes to permanently cross.
